The Cool Bands Page

Heres some stuff I think you should check out:

Secular stuff:

Tom LoMacchio- Singer/songwriter used to be known as Deadwood

Divine. Mellow songs with mellow lyrics, mostly about reminiscing.

Sunny Day Real-Estate: They've been doing it forever and they

keep on going. Indie rock band has almost broken through on a few occasions. Someday they will... just wait. Also check out lead singer Jeremy Enigk's solo stuff.

Toad The Wet Sprocket: Another underrated band. They've already

broken up, but are still in my cd player. The music lives on. If you like VH-1, check out toad to find out the most ripped-off band.

Ida: Pretty female and male vocals with very mellow music.

Sometimes a bit too mellow for my tastes, but still impressive.

Flaming Lips: Tenacious experimental rock band. The greatest

concert I've ever seen, by a landslide. Check out "The Soft Bulletin."

Jets To Brazil: Blake from Jawbreaker is still going at it.

Emo-pop-rock with beautiful lyrics. Perhaps the most poetic of all musicians.

Atom and His Package: Atom from Philadelphia. Package from Japan. How can ya not

love that?!?!?!

Rainer Maria: Rock from New York. A real treat to watch live. Sounds like old

Veruca Salt meets Braid. You know I like that.

Gods Reflex: I've followed these guys for about 6 years now. The only band I

can honestly call "Beautiful Punk." Poetic lyrics mixed with angst and confusion. A great album to follow a breakup with.

Christie Front Drive: Speaking of breakup... They've been disbanded for a couple

of years now, but the music lives on. Pick anything up by them ASAP because it may go out of print. Music is emotional rock with a concentration on the instrumentation over the lyrics, hence pointless lyrics like "dance while you can" and "Put your hands down." Beautiful. One of my all-time faves.

Weezer: I don't have to go indepth here. I like them.

Liquido: German pop band that sings in unaccented English. Like Weezer with

keys... I like more than Weezer, believe it or not. Not available in USA but one of the top bands in Germany. Try to pick up some Mp3's, especially theyre big single "Narcotic."

Travis: Finally catching on in America, these guys have been huge in Britain for

awhile. Their debut cd was out for over a year overseas but was finally released in America.

Nada Surf: High/Low was bad. The latest release "The Proximity Effect" is one

of the greatest pop-rock releases ever, in my opinion. Very emotional, downcast songs about injustice. These guys have grown up in a huge way... they're gonna be HUGE!

Jimmy Eat World: Clever lyrics meant to melt girls like chocolate in the

Sunshine coupled with poppy music. Very cool.

Elliott Smith: Sad music about breakup, drug-addiction, and anything else tragic.

Beautiful in an abstract way, though. I need to be in the mood to listen to Smith, but he's still a good one.

Radiohead: See Weezer.

American Football: Another broken up band... members of Cap'n Jazz. Pretty, yet

depressing. Lyrics are abstractly formatted into the music. Give it a listen. I don't think its for everyone, though.

Christian Bands:

The Elms: Newcomers to the Christian scene from southern Indiana. Sound a lot

like Jimmy Eat World, but with better vocals and more diversity from song to song. The next Jars of Clay-type breakout?

Pedro The Lion: Caught on originally with the underground-emo-indie scene.

Since playing Cornerstone in 2000, has really burst onto the Christian scene. The only downside is that the music is so downcast that it has no place on the radio and won't be heard by many Christian Contemporary fans.

Delirious?: One of the all-time greatest Christian bands, this UK group started

out in the 90's writing acoustic praise songs for a church group. Have since gone onto a Radiohead-esque electronic rock sound for their "Mezzamorphisis" "Glo" cd's. They're just getting better and better. Amazing production.

LaRue: Outstanding Christian pop from this brother-sister duo. Nancy's vocals

are mesmorizing. Oh yeah... and they're still teens. Check out their petition against premarital sex.

Caedmon's Call: Music for all whom like good music. They're not afraid to use

different percussion instruments (bongos), nor to assert themselves spiritually. So many Christian bands are afraid that using the name "Jesus" in their songs will scare fans away. C.C. are the antiphesis of this viewpoint.

Third Day: Perhaps the fastest rising Christian act, this Georgia band appeals to

rock fans, country fans, and Christian contemporary fans. If you haven't heard them before, their most popular singles are "I've Always Loved You" and "Love Song." Get them now.

Smalltown Poets: Punkish band with very strong lyrics. Vocals are beyond

excellent. However, I'd like to hear them do something different, perhaps a praise cd?

Common Children: Hard-rock Christian band. Don't know much about 'em yet, but

from what I've heard, I like a lot.

Burlap To Cashmere: Burlap took a Flamenco-esque sound and combined it with a

country-type style of rock to produce beauty. Pure beauty. Even though "Anybody Out There" and "Basic Instructions" were their biggest hits, the whole cd is great.

Sammy Ward: Country-pop-praise. Amen brother Sammy!

Lincoln Brewster: Rockin praise music!
